Fashion History in an Image 3

Until now, here at theFword we posted images of fashion icons. But today, It's a different story! I give you maybe one of the most iconic images of bathing suite history!
An image of Washington policeman Bill Norton measuring the distance between knee and suit at the Tidal Basin bathing beach. All this happened in the '20. When women swimsuits started to get shorter and tighter...even starting to look a lot like the swimsuits that men used to wear back then. Plus...hmmm, is it just me or do the look a lot like the mini-dresses of the '60s!!!

Now, this police officer (in the image) was just doing his job, because Col. Sherrell, Superintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds, issued an order that suits not be over six inches above the knee. :))) Crazy times, but it happened. And we have this image to prove it!

Very iconic indeed! Also very representative for the first wave of the feminist movement and the rise in hemlines. It's true, it does look like a 60s mini dress. Your 20s swimsuit becomes your 60s dress, wonderf if the same thing will happen with a 2010 swimsuit in 2050 :p
